    Question TD5 EGR Butterfly?

    Hi All,

I've just removed the EGR assembly on my TD5 and replaced it with a straight through section I machined up.

I've been searching on here trying to discover the purpose of the of the butterfly inside the EGR valve assembly. Early TD5 engines didn't have the butterfly but later ones did.

What's it for? I was thinking it was a way for the ECU to shut down the airflow in case of a diesel runaway condition but now I'm not sure.

The other thought I had was under deceleration it closed up so the engine vacum would then more efectively draw the exhaust through the EGR and into the motor.

    Cheers

the butterfly makes sure the exhaust gasses get int there and slows down the turbo.

with the butterfly I was engine braking with 1 or 2 psi of boost and with naff all engine braking.

without the butterfly if Im being nasty to it I can engine brake at 3-5 psi of boost and it engine brakes a little better as well.

you dont want to be engine braking that hard, it sounds like the hounds of hell are tyring to rip the engine apart.

less fresh air and more exhaust gass= less oxides of nitrogen.

    Thanks Blknight,

So you are saying it reduces the engine braking force having the EGR butterfly in there?

Or have you installed an exhaust brake valve as well?

not yet, I was going to install the exhaust brake with the 3 inch....

the butterfly chokes off the air inlet manifold from the intercooler.

this limits the air getting to the pots and back pressures the turbo causing the turbo to slow down.

removing it lets the air flow normally the air exits fairly quickly and will spool the turbo a little which pushes more air in..

I found out I can engine brake at 3-5 psi cause the misses mis shifted on a down hill...

I normally only get to a bout 3 and then Im considering the normal brakes to help out.

I guess it's probably not an issue for me since mine's an auto.

The drive train in a manual is still spinning the motor fast enough to get the turbo to make boost even though the ECU has shut the fuel down.

I've seen similar issues with supercharged cars on the circuit. The blower is still making boost while the engine is spinning and pushing a lot of air through the idle air control valving. Depending on the ECU mapping you can actually end up with bugger all engine braking and the car really pushing you through the corner.

    Cheers

yep but we're in a different world here, that thars racey petrol country... this heres diesel country, things happen a mite slower, a lot heavier and a lot more effeciently.

The Land Rover does a great job of towing the race car trailer. I'm very happy with it. I still get around 600KM out of a tank with the trailer and car on behind. It doesn't get there real fast but it happily cruiese at 110 on the freeway.

I'm still learning Diesels. I've been having great fun with my mods. I should have my VNT install finished this weekend. It's been a great learning experience. Hopefully the VNT will reduce lag and improve low mid torque to help getting the rig up and moving.

it'll work even better after you get the ECU mapped up to suit the VNT...

    EDIt:

but Id wat for the remap untill after youve done all the mods you want to do.

I had it remapped about a year ago and it made a noticable improvement. Talking with the guy that did it and he reckons the map should work OK with the new turbo.

Hopefully I'll get it on the dyno next week to get the boost pressure set and we'll see how good it goes.

    Cheers
