    Diff ratio matters..

    Hi all,

Im looking to fit bigger tyres on my 94 defender, 130, 300tdi and was looking at changin gear ratios back to standard. transfer case seems like an expensive option (for an apprenctice) and i'm now looking at diff ratios. i'm in the process of rebuilding the rear salisbury and already have new bearings. can anyone tell me wat is involved in changing diff gearing and who is a good supplier these?

    Cheers, Tim

How big a tyre are you fitting?.Just going to a 33'' needs no mods and is just about right on a defender. Pat

    33's will be fine, ie 285 75 R16 and 255 85 R16 sizes are close to 33''

Salisbury is similar to dana 60, so a lot of ratios are available. There is some difference between metric and imperial bolts. There is a particular ratio where the thickness of the crownwheel changed, which puts the flange on the carrier in a different position.

You will be limited however by few ratios available for the front rover diff - unless you fit landcruiser diff centre in the rover housing.

Unless you are think of running 35" plus i would not bother.
But if you were then you would be best of with 4.1 ring and pinions ratio to replace the one you already have.

There are lots of people who make them in the Uk from Ashcrofts to Kam. All the winch challenge boys use them.

I had a 90 with heavy duty 4.7 ring and pinions

    Thanks for the replies guys,

I was pretty keen on running 35" on it but i'm not yet sure they will fit. i only went a dobinson 2" lift on the suspension to avoid changing shafts, radius arms etc. i have been told they will fit but i'm not sure what ofset i would need. the 4.1 sounds like the go. do you thing i will be able to use the new bearings i've bought if i change the gears?

    Cheers, Tim

This is my old 90 . It has 35" tyres on here All i had was OME coils and shocks, Which is a 2" lift and no body lift.
All i had to do was trim the corners of the wheel spats
