I have just put an LT230 from a 98 auto 300tdi disco into my TD5 Defender and had no problem. The transfer case out of my Defender is now bolted to the ZF as well.
The only thing you have to watch is that the LT230 you pick has the later cross drilled input gear.

Yep this is correct and the early LT230's had narrower gears 26mm apposed to the later ones with 28mm wide gears and the early ones had no cross drilled input also there is a mod were as you bolt in an additional plate under the PTO cover which has a beak (so to speak) for catching oil to lube the spline of the output shaft and input gear as they suffer from premature wear ;)Quote:

Transplant OK. Check for centre diff backlash, leaks from intermediate shaft seals while it's out.
1996 model will have crossdrilled transfer gear.
Compare the rear casings on both boxes - you might need to swap them them for a good reason which escapes me at the moment - speedo transducer drive? Length?
I'll have a look or someone clever will point it out.
