I will have to track some of these down, know anyone that wants to sell the 0.996:1 matched set? I have tried several of the better known land rover shops, all out, next stop uk! I dont want it to go fast, just better on fuel and engine life. On another note how do you reckon the springs would go, reset with a couple of leafs removed for a softer ride and better articulation?

I had Stage one many years ago - drove many thousands of ks - from my experience I think that you will find .996 gears too high for the sort of use you are putting the vehicle to - the 1.13 or the 1.17 HR gears would be the best compromise. Geared too high fuel economy and performance on hills suffers.

Mine had the same HR ration as yours currently and it regularly returned mid twenties to the gallon on the highway cruising at 100kmh

Well thanks again! Now I'm confused! Was your stage one standard CHT? With the restrictors in the inlet mainfold? Mine has been ported from the maifold to the exhust, and a new cam with an early 1971 sd1? profile. I kept the standard low compression pistons to run on standard/ sub-grade fuel, this could be a problem? I get about 100ks to 16L!

My Stage one was bog standard - no restrictors under the carbies - standard cam and set up on the lean side. I put a plastic canister fuel filter in the line between the charcoal canister and the carburettors because the carbon dust was clogging up the air bleed controlled by the bi-metallic air valves.

On another note I have owned two 2 Door Rangies - the first one bog standard 1.17 to 1 high range - 20+ mpg on the highway and 15-18 in the bush, the second rebuilt engine aftermarket cam .996 high range, high compression pistons and pre pollution manual choke carbies - fuel consumption consistently 18mpg on the highway irrespective of how I drove it, and 14mpg or worse in the bush.

Your fuel consumption is very close to to my second Rangie.

If you would like to talk over matters pm me your phone number of alternatively if you prefer I will pm you my number
