Well, the Defender guys'll probably want a bit more info than that.

However what can be advised over the forum is pretty limited. 300K is getting up there but not out of the question if well maintained and price is right.

Best way is, if you tell us where you are, we can recommend a LandRover specialist to take it to for a once over.

Have you owned series/county Landies before ?

I wouldn't be put off by the km, but get it checked over by an expert.

Has it had the timing/case fix? (3-stage kit - a 1994 probably needed all 3).
Has it had the gearbox/tc lubrication fix?
Has the IP been rebuilt? (early VE pumps had a problem with the case hardening flaking off some components).

    Have you driven the vehicle?

How much do they want for it?

How much work has been done on the vehicle's transmission?

What is the chassis like in the way of rust?

At 300K km I'd be looking at a transmission rebuild both the R380 and LT230.

Engine? Probably has a few kms left in it if it is sound i.e., the head is good.

As said before best get someone who knows to have a look at it and get them to give you an estimate on what it will cost to get it sound if it is not already. The costs of repairs and the purchase cost of the vehicle should determihne if it is a good buy.

I wouldn't worry about k's if the above mention mods have been done. The gearbox would have been fixed already as it wouldn't have lasted this long and the engines go for miles if they aren't overheated. If it is the condition you say it is body wise there is a fair bet mechanical wise it the same. I'm surprised at how many people have transmission issues. My LT77 5 Speed which is weaker than the R380, and only ever ran on ATF behind a V8 Rangie, lasted 406,000km and could have lasted a bit longer with some better maintenance.

I'm hoping the R380 should last a lot longer behind a Tdi.

    As for value,
    (A) what's all the fruit on the car worth?
    ( what's the ute worth?
    (C) what could the ute possibly need doing (engine, gearbox, firewall etc).

are you prepared to pay $(C) to get $(A) + $(?

if you're not sure, get it inspected and instead of having a potential (C) sum, have an actual (C) sum and see if that makes it better value.

As for kms on a well maintained diesel, I wouldn't be worried, maybe factor in the price of a new set of injectors.
