Dave,
What are we looking for with the MkII eyeball? pitting? Is there something that the MkII eyeball will tell us if head is warpped?

what the MKII eyeball (eye assisted with a naturally iluminated observation device capable of close focus) should reveal is a pattern of erosion in the head this will be where the combustion gasses and the coolant have done their work on the head and should also be where the head is the most out of shape.
you may only be able to pick up the erosion as a change in the surface texture of the head.
Is there any differences that may prevent a complete Disco TD5 engine being fitted into my Fender. As far as I can tell from Paddocks there are two models of heads ( one has an external fuel return I think ???????)
As for the rest of the engine I don't know if there would be a problem. My 130 is a 99 build.
Thanks
Graz,
That looks a mess inside. There is a lot of rust inside the water jacket also
You may just have to get it skimmed to find out. When mine had its moment, the head looked perfect to the naked eye with a 12" steel rule, but they still ended up needing to take somewhere between 5 and 6 thou off it.
If you can see abbout 4thou I would be concerned about it.
The general consensus of opinion is that about 9 thou is the most you can skim off.
The engines are very similar, and you should be able to swap one for another reasonably easily.
You would need to reset the injector codes in your ecu, and work around the differences in the fuel cooler setup and EGR but is should (is) be possible.

When Pulling the head down and removing the head fuel manifold I removed the O ring and pulled the filter base only to dicover there was no filter element. closer inspection found the filter element was a further 15 or so mm in.
Effectively there was no prtection for the injectors from any debris down stream from the main filter.
There is nothing in the service records to indicate that the previous owner had any work done in that area and I certianly have not touched it since I have had the truck.
I guessing its failed due fatigue resulting from vibration.
Might pay to check your TD5. Is only three bolts to remove to check.
Cheers
