    Shortie Revamp

    Hi

I have a '85 110 V8 that has been shortened to 88" wheelbase. I completed the build two years ago & it has been great fun. I now want to rebuild it with a LS1,Rakeway 605, Ashcroft upgrades in the diff etc. The reason for more power is our speed limit on open roads is 120kmh which means everyone drives at 135kmh & I do a fair amount of km on them. I'm not looking for a sports car but the 3.5 I have in now cannot maintain 120 & cost of upgrading to a 4.6 does not justify the gains. The reason for the LS is the weight & I would like to maintain similar weights. I broke the lt95 box in my "quary" so I have to repair/replace anyway. I want to fit the LS1 using a carb (Edelbrock Q-jet seems to be able to handle the angles).Does anyone have a better idea or see any pitfalls, apart from the cost? Being an 88" wheelbase the rear prop is an issue. I have "twisted" the rear diff & used a hybrid u-joint & cv, worried about the torque of the LS

I have a stroked 3.5 (now 4.3) in my 110 and its happy to sit on 120 with RR (1.113) transfer gears in the LT95.

Having said that, I'd love an LS1. Carb conversions kits are out there, but are more complicated than you may initially think as the LS engines are distributor-less. A rear salisbury and LT95 should be up to the task, axles may need upgrading. You'd want to run very tall transfer gears.

I have a written-off GQ Patrol sitting behind my shed and have often thought about using the 5 speed GQ gearbox in my 110 behind an LS1. Adaptor kits are also readily available for the LS1 to these gearboxes. IMHO the GQ 5 speed (as found behind the 4.2 engines) is the best 4WD gearbox around. Its built like an LT95 but its a 5 speed and has no clunkiness whatsoever with a much nicer shift action. My only complaint is that the low range transfer ratios are not as good as an LT95.

Consider using Patrol diffs, a (GQ front diff almost bolts in) as a cheap way to get a bullet proof drivetrain if you do the work yourself. If you can shorten a 110 to 88", you should be OK.

Would the total length of the GQ be any longer than the lt95?
