getting in an out of CDL on the move

hi all,, just a fast Q,, iv started to get abit lazy when 4wding, an puting the CDL in an out on the move,,, not at a huge speed but not at walking pace,,, maby around 15-20kph,

i do it with no power on an clutch in,,, but i find it gets in an out so much easyer then stoping an backing up/an that sort of stuff,

is this doing any harm to the CDL or other parts of the drivetrain?,,

    Use it

Don't worry that's what it is for. Do it at will. Not on hard stuff though.

I am for ever flicking it across and back and have no ill effects since July 98.

    Regards,

    Shouldnt.
If its "wound up" you wont do it like that, you will need to back up.
The light will stay on(my D2 does) till unwound.I do the same as you do,only back up if it doesnt pop out first try.

As long as you have 100% traction and i think you have to have your wheels straight as well

I lock and unlock the centre diff at any speed, provided I don't have any wheel spin while I am doing it.

Locking the centre diff at any time there is no wheel spin will do no damage. Unlocking it will do no damage at any time it is possible - if it is under load, you will not be able to move it (the LT95 solves this by applying spring or vacuum pressure so that it will disengage as soon as there is no load on the dogs).

I've been doing the difflock on the fly for a while now without drama.

Now I'm trying to get the low to high on the fly sorted. I've read the technique on how to do it but I cant pull it off yet (well actually I gave up on the first go and just stop now, I don't like grinding noises, but I would like to be able to do it)

Well the salesman from Massaro's did it in ours when we test drove it and it also says thats it is fine in the operators manual to change at any speed.

It will come unlocked as soon as there is a change in speed between the front and rear axels so there is really no point in reversing, just go around a corner.

Mines auto and I change from low to high on the fly if the conditions are right:

a.on a slight down hill stretch of road, not too steep and not flat so you can maintain speed.
b.Select neutral on the main shifter(or in a manual, disenguage the clutch)
    c. with a smoothe action not too fast and not to slow without stopping in the middle slide the shifter back into High.
d.Put the shifter back into drive (or enguage the clutch)

It may sometimes clunk but ive been doing this for 4 years and mine still together and I know others who have done it for as long as they can remember but unless your confident that you can do it smoothly then I would stop and change it as you can do damage pretty easilly.
