Low to high is relatively easy and unlikely to do any damage. High to low is more difficult, and likely to cause damage if muffed, particularly on Series Landrovers with sliding gears for low range.

For someone who learned to drive on vehicles with no syncromesh, or indeed for those who regularly drive Series 1/2 with no synchro on first and second, changes either up or down are not going to present any difficulties, particularly on coil sprung Landrovers with constant mesh on both ratios.
