    Car died---seems fuel related

    Hi all,

I have a TD5 Discovery 2000 that SWMBO was driving home today after picking up the kids and she said the car lost power before finally stopping about a 1km down the road, only about 500m from home.

Anyhow, the fuel pump doesn't seem to be working, there is no power to the fuel pump plug (tested unplugged does it need to be plugged in?). The fuses are ok, there is power to the fuel solenoid-- but I can't hear it clicking so I am sure that this is not being switched.

By RAVE this should get is signal from the ECM, I pulled this out and found oil in the red plug so I cleaned both plugs. Are these the only plugs?

The fuel pump was whistling a couple of weeks ago (just after I replaced the fuel regulator) however it has been quiet since then. I tested the fuel cut off switch and that is fine.

Is there something I have missed?

    Any pointers would be great

    Danny

There is a fuel pump relay, which it would be worth checking first, but I would be thinking the pump has packed up.

ETA, With regard to the oil, it may be worth checking the AFM Plug, and you will need to change the loom under the rocker cover, otherwise the oil will keep coming through

ETA, After rereading, I guess by solenoid you mean relay... is the crash inertia switch ok? hasnt gone off?

Probably start with the relay then, but pumps are a bit unreliable so it may be that.

    Thanks for you help

Know of anyone in Brisbane that would have one to purchase tomorrow, Ricks is closed, is MR's open?

    Hi Danny,

This is what RAVE says about the fuel pump relay in case you haven't already read it.

    Fuel pump relay operation
The ECM grants an earth path for the fuel pump relay coil on a UP wire from
the engine compartment fusebox to ECM pin C0658-5. This allows the feed
from fuse 10 to pass through the relay contacts and connect from the fusebox
on a WP wire to the fuel tank unit.
The fuel tank unit is connected on a B wire to earth eyelet connector C0810-1.
The fuel pump operates and the fuel gauge sender unit energises to operate
the fuel gauge in the instrument pack.
Have you checked for an earth signal at the ECU output to the fuel pump relay?
That is worth checking if you can't hear the relay clicking.

Checking the pump is easy. It has 4 connections. Two are for the gauge and the other two are for the pump. Just disconnect the fuel line somewhere connect 12v to the pump and see if it pumps. First just jump the relay like you mentioned but if that doesn't work then do it at the pump with a new +ve and -ve as it could be wiring on either side.

If it is the pump then can you just swap out the actual pump inside the housing like on the Disco1? If so then they can be had cheaply from Repco. My Disco1 pump was a Bosch on the shelf for $100.

One thing that concerns me with what I have read in the RAVE is that it says on various things that it only does A if B is satisfied so perhaps the fuel pump is further down the line of things the ECU checks when starting than the faulty part is?

I was going to come over this weekend anyway so if you haven't sorted it by the time I get there then I'll give you a hand.

Well I should be home all day tomorrow and not sure on Sunday as yet.

I did look at the rave, and I have tested most of the "if A then B" items but now have stopped at the relay....

    More tomorrow I think

Don't people on here say the crank position sensor is the only one the ECUs can't bypass with a default? Maybe it is that???

    See you tomorrow then.

Wont be the crank position sensor. If the fuel pump or fuel pump relay dies you wont be starting the car.

Just chased the power down to the pump, looks like I need a new one.

Reread the book last night and the pump relay cuts out after set time, just had to measure whilst it was on.

Now I need to go to MR
