Thread: Help with a Ford, yes you heard a Ford

As you suggested it probably is shuting cylinders down due to overheating.
Spiting coolant out and it still reading a normal level is a wory.
First check would be a "sniffer test" to detect exhaust gasses in the coolant.Any mechanic should have the gear to do so.

Could it be something as simple as an airlock in the fuel system? I remember my Dad having a similar problem on 'hot days' (!) in the UK years ago, although that was a carby not EFI. I also had a problem starting on hot days in a V8 TR7, i was advised to change a 6 inch long rubber fuel line running into the Holley for a stainless braided item. Apparently the heat caused the fuel to evaporate from that section, braided hose kept the fuel cooler! The guy i bought the car from had always had this problem, once i did this it never happened again.

I can't help, but ... can you confirm if this is

Petrol only
Dedicated gas
Gas / Petrol


Coolant loss ... sure it's not the water draining from the A/C??

Fords? .... would only drive a Ford

See if you can get the thermostat checked out. I think from memory the factory ones had a tendency of going walkabout.... not opening at the right temp causing engine to overheat etc...

Car is an AUIII Sedan 4.0l I6 on Petrol only.

Was thinking about the thermostat and radiator. Neither have been touched from new (hoses still have the snap off hose clamps).

Duncan - Vapour Lock was a thought due to the excessive temps we've been having at the moment, hence changing the filter, to no avail.

Mike90 - Definately coolant, when stopped the coolant level goes up and then overflows, but returns to normal when started.

When running you can see coolant coming into the tank from the thermostat housing bleed, but not the radiator bleed, is this normal???

Otherthing is, I can feel a temperature difference between the top and bottom of the radiator, is this normal as it is crossflow? Appears to be no temp difference across the top (left to right) its bl**dy hot, but much cooler down the bottom.

first thing i would be looking at is ignition problems, but also the thermostat housing bleed is a bit of a concern, chuck a new thermostat in and change the coolant while you're at it

Hello How much fuel is in the tank?

Also is the fuel pump noisey e.g. is it cavitating loud grumbling noise in tank possibly boiling fuel in the line causing it to vapourise.

any thing is possible when we cant see it or hear it.
