Nice!
Greetings,
Well I managed to fit the EGR removal kit supplied by B-A-S a week ago with reasonable success. Only took an afternoon after having to go to the local hardware store to get a 5mm hex drive as it was impossible to use a standard allen key on the exhaust manifold bolts. I thought some pics might be of interest also to prove that I did it. The valve is rather gunged up but apparently this is normal. Sorry they are a bit blurry but you get an idea of what condition the valve was in.
Manifold End
Intercooler End
End of Manifold
The gunge on the inside of the manifold was pretty thick too.
The only casualty of the execise was I managed to round off one of the exhaust manifold bolts when tightening it, I just hope Idont have to remove it again.
I was expecting an improvement in performance but not what followed. Under load at around 2800 RPM in 3rd, 4th or 5th the engine would falter and lose power. This was combined with a whistle/whirring noise. Bugga I thought, there goes the intercooler hose that I replaced 90,000km ago in Esperence at great cost. A search on this forum gave a few possiblities especially pointing to the hoses but I could not detect a fault in them.
I got in touch with my Disco doctor, Peter at PCB LandRover and he suggested to drop in on the way to work and he would have a look as he had an idea as to what the problem was. Well 15 minutes later I was off to work with the TD5 breathing nicely and issue free. Apparently the turbo wastegate modulator was not happy I had removed its friend the EGR. The quick fix was to replace the disgruntled modulator with a new one. I and my Land Rover are at one again .....................til next time.

Nice!
Hi DaveF - So after replacing the modulator - did you notice any improvements? (ie was it worth it?)
There should be some improvement ,Have alook at the restriction that is inside the thing any improvement would have to be better
Im making a bypass kit for my Td5 as we type so when done ill let you know
Oh and when i removed my Egr there was nowhere near as much crud inside mine![]()
Hi guys,
Yes there is improvement after the modulator was replaced and now the Disco seems to run smootheras it is probably breathing easier, either that or I just want it to run better due to the effort and attention it has received. The test will be driving it up the freeway tonight.
Also a big thankyou to Tombie for his step by step instructions listed here: http://web.mac.com/rovertech/TRT/Veh...tructions.html Only problem was I could not print off the instructions so had to set up the laptop in the carport.
Yes, I even did the tidy up of removing the EGR controller and vaccum hose.

Well drove home up the South Eastern freeway last night with the aircon on and it ticked along nicely in 5th, even gained speed slightly where it normally would not.
So the result is yes, I agree that there is improvement which I am happy about.
Now to survive my daughters wedding on the weekend. I watched Father of the Bride last night and got a bit teary eyed hmmmmmm.

Howdy,
Well its been a few weeks since fitting the EGR Blanking kit and thought I would share my results so far.
1. Increase in fuel economy to 10.5km/litre or 9.5l/100km. I was consistantly getting 10km/litre or 10l/100km before fitting the kit.
2. Increase in power/more responsive in 1st through to 4th gear.
3. For some reason at 100km/hr in 4th at the bottom of the SE freeway heading home, rpms are now 3.3/3.4 compared to around 3.0 previously???
Overall very happy with the result and reccommend it. Now considering an ECU upgrade/replacement as it is a non flashable one.
Cheers

Well I’ve taken my EGR off including the water cooler and am looking to “complete” the removal by replacing the vacuum line with a non EGR vacuumed one.
On reading a thread on this forum about a possible oil leak if the lower left bolt attaching the water cooler was not replaced.
So when I got home tonight I had a look., my head has a “stud” coming out the bottom left but there seems to be an “oil” film over the front of the motor ?
While I’m not sure if the oil is coming from around the stud I’ll put the bolts back in with washers and see how it goes.
When researching the web and various fourms this was the only forum that mentioned this potential problem.
My TD5 defender is a 2001 model LR replaced the head and injectors under warranty. But I’m continuing to find production problems “but that’s the joy or LR”
Thanks again
