I had it on trickle charge last night for 12 hours since I flattened it when I was working on the fuel pump, I know my axx battery is dead (not used anyway) but the other one is happy to run my Aircon at full blast.. I will test it with a mutli-meter, but have found that if its flat or going flat the solenoid on the starter clicks.. I do not get it this time, Nor do I get dimming of the lights when I try to start.Quote:

Hi Cam.
Have you checked the fuse box in the engine compartment.
There should be a 60amp and a 100 amp fuse in there.
If they are ok there is a couple of things you can try.
At the ignition. bridge across the brown with white trace and the white with red trace. This will engage the starter as soon as they touch so make sure its not in gear. If it winds over the prob is in the ignition switch.
If it doesn't-
If you can get to the starter bridge the big red wire with the brown and red traced wire.
Be very care full. the red comes straight from the battery and the brown with red trace IS the starter wire. It should crank over as soon as these touch. Again be careful as this will spark.If it does not turn over its in the starter solenoid or starter itself.
If it does crank over you need to look for relay 102. not sure where it is but that is the starter relay that the key controls.
If the lights etc work ok then it's doubtful it is the battery.
Im guessing the starter solenoid on the starter motor itself is gunked up.

get your battery tested with a proper tester, not a mutimeter, a stuffed battery can still show 12.8v accross the terminals with a multimeter,,but deliver no crank amps when required to.
Check the wire from the ingnition that energises the solenoid (on the starter) when the key is turned to start. This wire will go all the way to the starter and is normally the smaller wire to the starter. Check when the key is turned to start that there is power to that terminal. If there is then it must be the starter or solenoid. Sometimes if it is a spade terminal it can be lose or even come off and it will have the same symptoms as you state. If the lights do not dim when the key is turned to start there is no power to the starter. Also check the main power lead at the starter motor, as if that is lose it may not have an impact on the head light brightness.

depending on the starter motor location you could:
A - ensure the vehicle is in neutral, jack up on axle stands to be safe.
B - Crawl under the car and apply 12v to the starter motor exciter wire, if the starter is ok it will crank.
I guess if you're not game to crank it you could just check the ring terminals down there are tight and the fatter one (from the battery) has 12v.

I had similar issues, turned out to be the starter motor solenoid, I would of helped yesterday, but I was home and had a couple of beers under the belt also i was on the way home at the time you posted, I work in Peakhurst:(Quote:
