A can of worms will be opened here if you're not carefu!!
Do a search on TDI vs TD5. There are a lot of threads on it.
they are both good, but both have some issues.
The D2 which will have the TD5 is very different to the TDI engined D1, in a lot more ways than just the engine.
Rgds
Pete.

The tdi's parts are alot cheaper, and the motor is alot simpler (no computers), and the td5 is alot more powerful and returns better fuel figgers

Hi Rattles,
I own a 92 Discovery Tdi. It has proven to be an excellent, extremely reliable car. I do about 200k's per day, it is comfortable and very economical when you consider the class of vehicle it is. (800 k's per tank, this figure drops slightly with hard driving off road, but not too much) Mine is a 200 not a 300.
I would not hesitate to recommend this model in good condition. As mentioned earlier they are very simple (less to go wrong) and with the CDL (Central Diff Lock) very capable offroad.
I am biased but I feel you may find a better example were you to go tdi rather than V8 as they are not a speed machine.
Look for rust under the carpet.
Good luck....... I was originally going to have this car for a year as a learner then get a 2003/2004 TD5. I have changed my mind, though the TD5 is a fantatstic car, mine has proven to be to good an option for the price I paid. Well under 10K.
I hope you find what you are looking for.
Jay
