Bugger
Driving to work topday and lost 2nd gear. That is, when in second gear ther was NO drive at all.
This was sudden though was not accompanied by any griding, crunching or otherwise sphincter tightening noises.
I still had other gears (well, i didn't try 5th but 1,3 and 4 were there) so I was able to drive it to the mechanics.
Can anyone theorise on what the problem may be and how complex and (I'm worried about this part) expensive it may be to fix.

Answering my gearbox problems this morning.
Only by PM, unfortunately, not with a spanner.
is the shifter still moving into the position of second?
if your lucky its something stupid like a bending of the bottom of the shift lever stopping it from engaging the second or a misalignment of the detents/interlocks. That however doesnt usually only take out one gear or allow you to select a position.
The only 2 things I can think of that will let you move the selector into position and not select a gear are a fouled baulk ring or the engaging dogs torn out.
if it was something like a selector fork slipping on the rod usually you can get it into gear but not out or vice versa and it has the effect on both gears on that rod.

2 weeks ago we had a LT77 in a 200Tdi D1 that had no gears but 4th. When the owner rang up I thought, hmmm, layshaft? brg failure? stripped mainshaft to hub spline????
When the vehicle arrived, It turned out that the shifter centralising plate had broken in 2 and fell down into the shifter 'well', preventing the stick from going far enough to select any other gears.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
If only it was that simple.
Turns out that 2nd gear is held onto the shaft by a weld which had failed !
Jason at MR's tells me he's never seen it before in an R380 and only once (a month ago!) in a series Landy. He diagnosed it correctly before he even had it stripped down !
Taking the opportunity to have the Tcase done while its out - adds to the bill but will save money down the track.
I could have bought a nice new rifle and scope with what it's costing me (though her indoors would have another view) but at least by mid-next week I'll be mobile again.
Would rather it not have happened though !
