    TD5 Engine Cover Nut

    Greetings,

I do love my Land Rover but some things do get to me. Like how the assembly/mounting that holds the nut in place that the single bolt on the ECU side of the motor that holds the engine cover in place is able to come loose and then snap. There are two bolts on the exhaust manifold side???? why only one on the ECU side???
When you cant secure the cover the vibration/noise is annoying.
Not quite as annoying as finding out that the genuine replacemant part will cost between $30-$40 from a dealer.
Has anyone had this problem? and is there a cheaper work around for this?? or should I just pay the $$ and be done with it.

    Cheers

I welded a nut to a bracket then bolted the bracket to the fuel cooler using an existing bolt.

for others with this problem, just buy a new captive nut and bolt for a couple of $ - or just remove the engine cover altogether...

Fair comment, however I would have if it was only a couple of $ but $35 is a bit rich from a dealer for the captive nut by itself.

that's why you don't get them from a dealer - any specialty fastener place will have the right size...got mine for a couple of bucks...but then decided to just get rid of the cover anyway - a little bit more noise but slightly improved cooling (when combined with some venting out the side of bonnet - i.e. remove rubber sound proofing strips) and one less thing to remove for any maintenance/repair work.

My captive nut came loose on the ECU side but I just used some wire to secure it. I always carry some gal wire, it has so many uses when you are in trouble.

The captive nut is known as a caged nut and these are available from sheet metal suppliers or larger nut and bolt suppliers - no idea how much they cost but a lot less than the dealers price. I have googled a supplier but not contacted them. A company in Vic called Concept Fasteners have info on these.
