To Stop-leak or Not to Stop-leak

Gidday, I am new to this forum but have read and found it very helpful.

I have a 98Disco which I have just replaced the old 300tdi with a new short motor rebuild, and found it to be leaking at the rear main seal (installed new with the motor). So I pulled it out again and after talking to a diesel machanic, I put the seal back on using less sealant behind the seal housing as that is where it appeared to be leaking. After putting the engine back in again, it still leaks - possibly the T-seals?
Rather than pull the motor out again, could someone give me advice on whether I should use stop-leak or not. Does this stuff have any adverse affect on any other part of the motor. As the motor is new and running very nicely (new injectors on the way). I wouldn't want to do anything stupid.

All constructive critism and advice welcome.
    Cheers

    A few Q's .....

If you paid particular attention to re-fixing this seal .... Was there anything obvious about any defects in this area?

    What was the mechanics opinion?

What oil brand / grade are you using?

Sorry I'm so late getting back Mike, and thanks for your reply
I had a house full of visitors.

I had a good look at the whole facings of where the housing meets the back of the block, looking for burls or scratches but all looks good, as it should be with a reco/new short block.

My mechanic thought it may be T seal - only one way to find out

I'm using Penrite HPR 5w40 oil. I hope this is not thin.

I did a bit more reading a nd realise the stop leak stuff works by swelling seals, not blocking gaps. I think I'll do like a lot of LR owners do and see it as acceptable weepage.

    Cheers

Mark, Stop-Leak is a temporary fix and you will continue having issues. I don't tolerate poor workmanship – ask yourself the question, why is the seal leaking in a rebuild short motor? – is it something I did causing this? If you weren’t the cause, it is up to the supplier of the donk to rectify any problems under warranty. Unfortunately, if you assembled the rest of the motor and installed it into the vehicle yourself then you are responsible for removing it and taking it back to your supplier for diagnosis and repair.

These are my thoughts also .... By any chance ... did you check the sump for warpage??

    Gidday to All,
and thanks to all for your responses.

I'll definitely give the stop leak a miss, and as I put the rear seal and motor in, it'll be up to me to pull it out and fix. (will do this before the novelty wears off!)
I did check the sump for warpage using a flat surface and also a steel ruler, but as I'm a novice to major engine rebuild, I might have missed something. I take it that the slightest amount of warpage will cause problems.
I see comments about synthetic oil. The Penrite HPR5 5w40 is a semi synthetic.
Is there a problem using this in a 300tdi and what oil would you recommend?

    Cheers
