Qucik query: jump starting from 2nd battery

    Hi,

I've been away for a while and the disco 1 (300tdi) won't start.

There is a dual battery system connected (SC 40).

Can I try and jump off the second battery and see if it will start?

Do i need to disconnect the second battery first before connecting jumpers?

    Thanks in advance.

    Matt

Hi Matt, just jump start from your auxiliary battery, no need to disconnect anything.

I agree but with the proviso that your second battery is a rated cranking battery and not a deep cycle jobbie.

Hi Blknight, that doesn’t really matter for a single jump start.

Most deep cycle batteries can be use for a jump start and not be effected by one or two jump starts, just don’t do it on a regular basis.

A few deep cycle batteries can not produce the current require for a jump start but it still won’t effect the battery by trying.

Either way, particularly if your stranded, it won’t hurt to try.

it can... some deep cycle batteries have a fusable link between the terminals and the plates if you try to draw to much out of or push to much into the battery it lets go.

Admitedely I havent seen one in years but as the batteries are sight unseen due care and all that crud...

Normally Id link in parallel and get a tow or push start if the second battery was a deep cycle.

True but I am assuming he has an automotive deep cycle battery and not a old RAPS battery.

just did a search... some deep cycle batteries still have them but they are ment to be used in a fixed installation like a solar power plant that gets left unattended.

I still dont think Id go a jump from a deep cycle battery if the main battery was dead, if it just needed a little help Id consider it.

That’s the only place I’ve ever come across “strange” batteries but I did have an auto elec customer of mine, many years ago, showed me one of his customers vehicles and the old guy had a glass battery as his auxiliary battery, inside the cab.

He only used it to run a radio but it was not my idea of a safe option.
