    99 Defender 130 viscous coupling

    Hi Guys,

I have a 99 defender td5 with a siezed viscous coupling. I'm thinking about having a crack at changing it myself, but as a novice mechanic am very wary. I've been quoted $600 for a fix. Is this something I can do myself without too many problems or am I just asking for trouble??????? Any tips would be greatly appreciated

This is the engine fan right?
    $600!!!
I don't know what they are worth but I would want it made of solid gold for that price!
My response would be thank you but no I don't want the hubble telescope right now. I only want the fan replaced.

I think most places sell the fan for around $480, On the TD5 the viscous coupling is permanently mounted into the fan blades. Apparently you do need some sort of spanner to get the coupling off. You can make one, I had one from years ago that fitted my old Range rovers.

It's worth replacing ASAP - a seized fan can explode - and I've had this happen! The flying plastic blades most likely will take out the radiator, hoses and shrouds. When my fan exploded it cut the power steering line. Made a huge mess... (And a series of funny dents in the bonnet!!)

The actual job is easy - Just need to remove the cowl and one nut. (As long as you have a spanner that can shift the nut.) I seem to recall the nut is reverse threaded.... ie it undoes in the opposite direction (Or was that the range rover.... Might need to check the manual)

    Yeah, reverse thread.

It's worth getting yourself a proper fan spanner. They're not too expensive. Thump it with a soft faced hammer to loosen it and it'll then spin off.

With the right tools, 5 mins work (and that's including the time taken to get the tools out & put them away after. )

Are the fans the same as Tdi's and V8's?,if they are just fit a falcon fan from the wrecker, they are as cheap as chips. Pat

The fan on my '99 TD5 D2 nor my '03 TD5 D2 were/are NOT reverse threaded. An early version of the D2 WSM that stated it was reverse threaded but the later publication had been corrected. The fan is driven anti-clockwise so a reverse thread would be inappropriate.

Graeme is spot on. Teh TD5 fan is NORMAL thread

Edited to add, its 36mm from memory and you can enlarge a Falcon fan spanner to do it.

Pat - I have a recollection that the V8 and Diesel fans operate in different directions..... but I stand to be corrected on that!
