Check your swivel bearing pre loads and wheel bearings, also check the rear A frame balljoint and bushes as when worn these can cause a rear steer effect.

Great forum !! an incredible amount of info here, I look forward to spending time going through it and learning more about LandRovers.
I have a 96 Tdi Discovery that is sensational, apart from one major problem.
If I hit an uneven section of road, pothole, railway tracks etc at or above 80 kph a serious shudder develops in the front end then through the steering wheel then can worsen so much that the dash and seats are shaking !.
If I dont hit the brakes or hold the wheel tight it continues and worsens. If I hit the brakes early and slow back to 75 ish I can usually keep driving.
On good roads it will travel fine at 100, however I have to really keep an eye ahead for bumps etc...
It seems to do it more often in 5th gear than 4th.
I am assuming that it's coming from the front end, however a mate that was in the car when it happened one day thought it was from the rear left ???
I bought the vehicle 2 months ago and it has done it since then.
In that time Ive replaced the following to try to solve it .
Panhard Bushes.
Front shocks and damper.
Balljoints etc.
Front tyres.
Wheel Balance (twice).
Wheel alignment (also twice).
There is a slight Uni knock sound coming from the front occasionally, they will need replacing soon but a LR mech here at Hervey Bay said they shouldnt have any effect ( he also said he's seen grown men cry trying to fix this fault haha....)
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated !!

my moneys on the wheel bearing preload or the swivel bearings thats being set off by a slightly heavy wheel.
it might just be a case of a re-adjust or you may need to replace parts.

i am going to go with the above and throw in the steering damper to boot!
Check things like damper bushes too as a simple thing such as a loose damper will do the same thing.
Had this just recently but worthwhile going thru cheapest to most expensive....![]()

I have a new damper in it, the top shelf one from British Off Road.
If it matters , the vehicle has (ugly) Rangie Alloys that look heavy ....
Will look into the pre loads and check the A arm rubber tomorrow - is the Pre load adjust a big job or DIY ??

If there is one thing Rangie alloys aren't, its heavy.
In balance without a tyre is another story, but the rims wont be your problem.

I'll swap my Rangie rims for Disco originals if anyone wants...

A heavy tyre doesnt have to be out of balance its a dynamics thing when you start flinging it around it can misbhave, one of my usual checks for this is DIY tyre rotation if that fixes it leave the tyres where they wind up... assuming that thats not the case
swivel and wheel bearings are DIY but it depends on your experience and gear.
wheel bearing adjustments are easy but then Im doing them about every fortnight or so steering preload is a bit more difficult just to check and adjust but if you have to replace bearings its nearing a major effort.
if you dont have a comprehensive medium level tool kit with good quality sockets, torque wrench and a spring gauge you cant do the swivels reliabley and you need the 52mm hubnut spanner/socket to do the wheel bearings properly.
most major populous's will have a landy nutter that will lend you a hand and both items have been covered online in the tech forum..

This morning I did the pre load adjust, set the left at 7 kgs, the right one felt fine so I didnt touch it. Wasnt a bad job, a bit of fun actually. Removed a thin shim and left one thick one in. I noticed the hub moved easier between straight ahead and say 10 degrees then got slightly harder as it got closer to lock...I guess this is normal as the wheels are straight most of the time...
Thought Id fixed it as the left was very loose (about 3 kilos ).
Went for a drive and it still shook after hitting a few bumps above 80 k's....
Just pulled the Radius arms out to look at the bushes - they are all blue poly and look fine to me ....
Not sure where to go from here, maybe the A arm bush as was also suggested. Wheel bearings feel fine to me....
Any more advice gratefully accepted !!!!
