    Speedometers

Now metrification was in 1966, but when did speedometers in landies change from MPH to KPH?

My 11a is suffix G which is 69-71 and MPH so wondering when they changed.

Not in 1966 - much later in the early 70s - my 1971 Morris and 971 Landie had mph speedos but my 74 Galant did.

My 1971 Triumph 750 was in MPH, my 1969 Suzuki Hustler was in KPH, KPH were introduced in 1974, that's when all the road signs changed over, ADR laws required all new vehicles had to have metric speedos after 1974.

Also my 1966 Triumph 2.5PI was in both, it had a MPH outer and KPH inner on the speedo.

My father's 1975 Citroen had an mph speedo, but that is about the newest car I can think of that I have seen with mph. I doubt many cars had a metric one before 1974, and for many years after that most cars had a dual speed marking, although the odometer had changed from miles to kilometres. A few cars had dual markings before the metric speedo became a requirement.

I was at Leyland Truck and Bus when the first company cars we got with kilometre instruments were P76's so that dates it to 1974. Can't remember what the LR Series III had or when they changed. I remember reps cars with strips of thin tape stuck to the speedo glass to indicate 30, 50, 60 mph.

Ironic that it has come full circle, and now younger enthusiasts like myself are doing the same on our MPH speedos to indicate KPH!

Well, I usually just guestimate but you get my point.

From what I see (and I see a lot!) It would depend on the country of origin. The Brit's were slow to catch on but '74 sounds about right, Aussie's took the middle road with a lot of dual scales fitted by the dealers, the Jap's got in early and the American's still haven't figured it out

    Cheers,
