    Non LR winch question

I have been asked to fit up a winch to a 4x4 Isuzu Truck, (brand new) and need advice as whether we just go for Chinese cheapy 12000lb, or a Warn or similar 12000lb. The owner is using it for work use, so it will get used a bit. He is quite happy for us to service the winch yearly, so the ingress of moisture and regular cleaning and greasing won't be a problem. I was more interested in everyones thoughts on the electric motor quality and the absence or precence of bearings etc in various models? Any advice welcome
IE is it REALLY worth the $$$ buying a good winch when regular servicing will be done to an average one?

You might save him some $$$ .... but does it save you the frustration of having to replace it if it fails

    Hey Justin,

In my experience, yes it is worth buying a better one if its going to be used.

The best 12v motor available IMO is the XP 6HP one by Warn. It is excellent. very reliable, and powerful, though it does draw a fair amount of Amps!

The warn winches are also easy to strip, and the motors are interchangeable without much effort.

Some of the cheap chinese winches have the motor pressed into one of the sets of legs, which means you have to replace like for like, and it has to come from the same sourrce.

I am not tarring all chinese winches with that same brush as I realise they dont all have this now.

I really think however if its getting serious use, the Warn winches are worth every penny.

Both my current ones have basically been faultless, as were an xd9000 and another XP i had a while back.

I would also say you are far more likely to ensure a decent supply of spares from Warn if you did need them. I think my 8274 and XP both had a 3yr warranty on mechanical components and 12month on the electricals.

If you can get them to justify it, swap from the std solenoids, to the solid state ones, but again if they will pay, get Albrights not the chinese ones.

    can you run hyd power?

    you will need:

    hyd winch
    hyd pump
    hyd tank
    pressure relief valve
    control valve
    inline filter
    hoses..

Bush 65 really knows his stuff re hyds etc

for a working winch, its hard to go past a hyd set up. yes they are a bit more expensive... and please dont tell me a chinese winch will cost x and a hyd 4 times more...for a proper electric winch set up, you must buy a warn or similar quality, have a second heavy duty battery and all wiring etc installed.

a hyd winch will pull all day with speed, well after the elec has over heated....

Justin go the warn, mod the motor with a air pipe in and the top of the gear box with a vent pipe, run air from the trucks air system and it will pull all day without over heating. Put a drain plug and a fill level plug into the gearbox makes serviceing easy

we did this with two of our high mounts (as well as extending the drum)

work like a dream all day every day

i have a warn xd 9000 and a magnum 9000lb(cheaper make by warn) and have just finished re-building both. inside there is very little difference between the two but a big difference in price so if i were to buy another i'd go the magnum.

Thanks all for your suggestions and advice.

    A bit more info for you;

I can say for sure he won't be going Hydraulic as it isn't THAT much of a duty cycle required to warrant the $$ outlay, but a great suggestion all the same.
The 24V electrics in the truck will easily supply enough herbs for a 12V winch I feel for what he has in mind, which is pulling either the truck AND the boat he tows(A 14ft inland waterways ally fishing boat) out of slippery launching positions(!) or , as we discussed this afternoon, unhitching the boat and using the winch to pull the boat and trailer to dry ground and re hitching the truck.(My preferred solution)
The Warn with air cooling and fill/ drain plugs sounds like a good idea Tony, will look into that
A few more Q's, 24V vs 12V motors. Any preferences for torque and longevity?
Also, is there any advantage in plasma rope for this application? The distances aren't going to be more than about 15 to 20 metres from the water, so I presume wire would be the go?

It's possible some of these may be answered on the links kindly posted by Chucaro and Ron, But I might wait until Mnday and use Broadband at work to look through them, dial up is SUCH a chore

Once again, thanks all and keep the ideas coming!
