    Fairey overdrive parts

Ok, it seems that my overdrive may not be as healthy as I thougth at first.

To begin with, the bearing that goes on the clutch sleeve is missing.

Secondly the splines are rather worn on the outside of the clutch sleeve, and correspondingly worn on the mainshaft.

replacement cost for those three runs to over $500 usd from rovers down south that make the parts now, and $1500 gets you a new overdrive from them!!

Is there a local, or indeed any, other source of these parts?

    Hi Phoenix,

You could try Tim Britnell at www.dingocroft.co.uk. I bought the clutch sleeve needle roller bearing and some other bits for a Fairey OD some years ago and the prices were much better than anything local I could find. (Tell him Ian P. from 'somewhere' in Australia sent you. With every order, I give him a different delivery address...)

I have a set of .jpg images of an article on overhauling the Fairey OD. Please PM me if you'd like a copy.

Some of the bearings and seals should be available from your local bearing shop, but I was unable to find a cheaper source for most parts than Rovers Down South, although this will vary as exchange rates vary, and was a few years ago anyway. They are, as far as I know, the only people with all the parts.

I removed the overdrive from my SIII a couple of weeks ago to sell it to another member, but when he came over for us to install it, we realised he already had an O/D Transfercase, so I was going to put it on ebay after I get back from holidays.

If you want the entire Fairey Overdrive, with the lever & bracket to suit 4 or 6cyl, you can have it for $500. PM me if you're interested and I can weigh it all up for a postal quote. I can post it immediately, but I'll be away next week, so if you delay till then, you'll have to wait till I return.

The Overdrive has a whine in O/D which is audible with the floor removed and the motor idling. With the motor revving at 5th gear speed (2,300RPM) and the floor back in, it's not really audible and the reduction in engine noise more than compensates for any O/D noise.

I've also drilled out the pin size breather and put a wider bore barbed brass fitting, so a breather can be run up to the firewall. I found that much of the oil dissappeared as mist through this breather. I had it vented to a similar breather on top of my T/C, but I think a higher firewall breather would be better.

I've been running Moreys in the O/D to reduce the famed oil consumption.

I got it off a farm ute I'd bought about 10 years ago, and the whine was there when I got it, it hasn't gotten worse, and till 2 years ago, it was my daily driver.

Zenith Engineering in Milton Brisbane can recondition the splines, but wont work out a lot cheaper than the new ones from Rovers Down South, who hold the licence for making Fairey overdrives. Bearings are available from bearing shops, but aren't popular, and may be hard to get.

    Cheers, Mick.

Assuming the clutch sleeve is the same as the LT95 OD, you can get the needle rollers with an integral outside track at bearing shops.

Usually the outer track which is actually the inner surface of the sleeve is brinneled, so would have to be machined anyway.

AFAIK most of the other bearings and gears are LR, however the clutch sleeve and associated parts are Fairey. the biggest problem for mine was the thrust washer which was manufactured by my mate.

As far as I know there are no parts the same between the Series O/D and the LT95 one, although I believe the general design is similar.

The usual problem with the Series overdrive, other than bearings and seals, is wear on the drive dog, one half of which is part of the mainshaft - which is special to that unit and expensive, plus wear on gears, probably as a result of running low on oil due to the small capacity and the tendency to chuck it out the breather (or failing that, through the seal into the trnasfer case, or past the O-rings on the selector shaft, or past the gasket on the top plate etc)
