I can't prove anything as I never did any before and after temp readings, but it feels as if the cab and gear lever is a bit cooler on very hot days after lagging the entire first 4' of the exhaust from the turbo down.
One day I'd like to acquire this mat system R380 Mat, but I think they only produce for Series and 'fenders with LT77's and R380's so far.
I have experienced this heat problem since my first 200 Tdi Defender. I am now on my second Td5 Defender and still have the same problem.
It seems that heat from the motor and especially the turbo and exhaust gets trapped under the seat box and around the gearbox and can't be doing the gearbox any good.
Insulating the seat box/floor or running the air con might make cabin conditions somewhat more comfortable but does not really address the problem, the trapped hot air.
I have been thinking about ducting some air from in font of the motor to the gearbox/seatbox area but with other things to do, I haven't got past the thinking stage.
I'll be interested to read what others think about solving this problem.

I've noticed the Puma gets warm but I wouldn't call it hot by any means. The Tdi on the other hand...:eek:

The Puma set up (as opposed to the 300 Tdi) runs the exhaust from the driver's side of the engine and then crosses over to the passenger's side under the cabin just in front of the transfer case. There is a lot of metal to be heated up there without much air movement to help. Some more shielding might do the job.

I own the Puma but have not noticed the heat before. maybe because I have not travelled far in it yet.
I have been thinking about this problem and I am considering applying a coat of body deadener, to the total of the underside of the car.
This should help with the noise as well as the heat. I particularly noticed that stones flicked up by the back wheels moke a very loud noise.
Because most of the panels are aluminium, they will not rust. Even though, the products that I have looked at claim to prevent rusting as well.
I have only found the brushable body deadener, but would like to spray it on for better coverage.
Does anyone know where I might be able to find some spray on body deadener? Any ideas would be appreciated...

Mine gets hot as well. My wife rekons its an optional rear seat heater pack. Like those flash new Disco's.
I mainly seems to be around the transmision tunnel and rear of the drivers seat box. It only happens after you have been on the road at 110kph for a few hours. Dealer says that its normal so I just turn the AC on.
I dont remember the old Tdi300 getting as hot, but then it never went over 90 kph, and I used to have all the windows and vent open all the time cause it didnt have AC. 'hmmm, I miss those vents'
If anyone experiments with heat shielding or the like with any sucess I'd love to hear about it.

Has anyone tried the exaust wrap on there defender to help this problem. I did it on my little pug hatch back to keep the under bonnet temp down. (the radiant heat melted a loom!) The fiber glass tape was fantastic, you can touch the exaust on a hot car with out burning yourself.
FWIW - Even my 300TDi gets hot around that area.

I've never really noticed that sort of heat in my 110 TDCi. Have you checked to see if the hand brake is binding?
