I have done this for the 300tdi in the S1 disco I had as well as the TD5 in the S2 disco I now have. I also did it for the Nissan Z30 motor in a Patrol (no, I do not want to discuss this ownership, needless to say I now have a S2, OK!!)
I used standard remote adapters available from just about all "speed" shops (Rare Spares in Sydney). Both motors have the same configuration that allows a normal Ryco Z9 Ford filter to screw on. The main things I made sure that would do the job was to get hose and fittings from Pirtek that will handle up to 300psi. Not that it will get to this pressure more a case of they will not come off at the wroung time.
The 300tdi was easy to do with putting the remote filter on a bracket that sat on the drivers side fender so I could put an ice cream tub under to catch the oil.
The TD5 was a completly different matter. Putting the adapter on is easy after you remove the turbo so you have room to work in. Routing the hose between the turbo and the centrifical filter return pipe and the turbo oil return pipe is challenging to say the least but can be done. The higher pressure hose is able to withstand the heat better and with some hose protecter wrap from Pirtek, then no issue.
I put the remote bracket with one bolt through an existing hole in the front passenger side chassis rail just above the steel water pipe for the coolling. This was placed horizontily so when the filter unscrews the only mess is over one track rod straight into the pan. Very easy to wipe the rod after and screw a standard Z9 filter on. The Z9 is nearly twice the capacity of the standard LR filter and has a drain back and bypass valve in it.
Whilst I have been very happy with this setup, the hose did chaff a little after 15,000k's so a modified again after a lot of research. The centrifical filter on the TD5 is a sort of after thought from the designers to enable oil to be "flung" and then deposit larger lumps to the outside. Only 10% max of the oil flow actually goes through this filter. The research became more ernest when the "o" ring at the back of this filter decided to leak. The final conclusion was to remove the centrifical filter altogether, make up blanking plates for the reurn pipe and for the outlet. This was easy with a jigsaw and a 10mm gal plated piece of lintel iron from Bunnings. ($15). 100% of the oil now goes through the Z9 filter.
Now with the centrifical filter gone there is a heap of room in front of the turbo. This is where I now ran the hoses's down to the remote filter. I was able to shorten the hoses some 400mm and have a more dirct flow and minimal bending. This also took the hoses completely away from the turbo/exhaust heat.
In the 20k odd kilometres since doing this, I have not had any issues after removing the centrifical filter.
I do and always have, changed the filter and the oil every 5000k's anyway, probably overkill. The filtering area of the Z9 compared to the original LR filter plus the centrifical filter is only slightly less and with the shorter change time no problem. I also use Penrite 5w/40 diesel oil semi synthetic.
I have saved on the cost of a LR filter, even Ryco brand, the Z9 is around $6 compared to LR at $22. The additional capacity of the Z9 and hose raises total capacity around 300ml, I put in a measured 8.4l of oil when I do the change. I also do not get 3rd degree burns anymore or need to degrease the motor afterwards. Interestingly a mate of mine works at Grahme Coopers and tells me they include into the cost of an oil change, an engine degrease and wash down!!!!
For those worried about damage to the filter now that it is lower, the remote filter is tucked up at chassis level and will not get damaged off road, believe me I have tried!!!
So there you go, yes you can, yes it has been done!!! The cheaper filter, ease of getting at it and no centrifical filter to do, it costs me around $95 for 10l of the penrite and a Z9. Done every 5000k is still cheap motoring and good insurance.
I assume pictures would help, when I get out of this office and home I will take some photos of the TD5 install and post up. I think I have some photos of the 300tdi, so I will put them up as well.
