My 200tdi has worn out another valve stem slash cap. I replaced them about 20k ago. Is this normal or is it because I have not checked for clearance as often as I should have. Read never since I replaced them 20 k ago??

They brinell, the case hardening lets go, then they eventually shatter.
You may not pick it with a normal valve lash/rocker adjustment as the clearances may not blow out until they break up, but they can be shedding metal beneath the rocker pad.
Easy enough to change, just wind the rocker adjusters back, and very cheap.
IMO they are a must change every 100,000km or so with genuine ones, just to prevent the bits of metal going through the engine.

I find on a TDI 300 I can destroy a valve cap in about 20k using genuine landrover parts.(correct clearences maintained)

Having now seen a set of new genuine caps, I can easily see that the aftermarket ones I fitted last year are real cr*p. You are the first person I've heard of to have problems with genuine ones, Ron. Maybe the ones you had trouble with weren't real genuine 'genuine' parts?
Please correct me if I'm wrong but 250,000km+ seems typical for the originals - hardly what I'd call "poor design or poor material" for a part that is design to be 'sacrificial' - i.e. when these caps finally wear out, you can replace them at little cost and the valve stems remain in perfect condition.
Perhaps you should stick with Toyotas that have no "poor design or poor material" in them anywhere?

List of problems with 1995 defender 130 tdi 300.
Plastic radiator and themostat plugs cracking and almost costing me a motor
80k valve stem caps cracked up and one also broke rocker arm.
Valve caps cracked up at 139 k.
both lots replaced with original landrover items.
Wiring inside chassis shorted out.
Head light switch burn out.
landrover dealer quotes 4k for a short life timing belt whisle a cruiser one is 80 dollars fitted from the dealer.
Two sets of altenator bearings.
Head lining replaced.
Gasket between timingcase and block leaked coolant (big job)
Worn splines between gearbox and transfercase.
Worn drive flanges replaced.
worn drag link end replaced.
Clutch master cylinder new seals fitted and still in hard to access pedal box carried over from series 2 rovers.
Dash baord cracked in a few places.
Air con pipes rub through and leak all the time.
Back sliding window plastic locks always break.
bonnet release cable broken.
I can go on.
I am I being unfair ?
Do you want me to start on some other landrovers I have had ?
I f I own a Patrol GQ of the same vintage would I get so many problems ?
Do not get me wrong I love landrovers and this is a landrover site.
