Thread: Dont ya love it (squeaking belts)

What sort of motor is it? If it's a 300 Tdi I had one where the squeaking drove me mad(der) and I eventually changed the tensioner and all came good.

yeh, 300tdi
Cheesed off really because there was nothing wrong with the main belt that come off, only the air con belt was a bit dodgy and that belt didnt make a wimper before and only an accassional noise out of the air con. Now no noise from the aircon belt and nealy a constant noise from the main belt. I will give it a shot with a bit of belt grip and if that dosnt work I will rebuild mt other tensioner and fit it.

Same problem here
I think it might be warn pulley's, so thats the next to be replaced

The warn pulley's what? And, are they the ones made by the cricket player or the winch maker?

For what it's worth, a new tensioner has stopped all my 300tdi's long-term squeal problems.

Blaze, how do you go about rebuilding a tensioner?

Try cleaning the belt & pulleys with degreaser // Mentholated Spirits ... as you removed the components you put grease over the belts and the pulleys

only refit a new bearing, got a spare in the shed with a shot bearing, the rest of it looks good

Generally its just the pulleys have a polished surface on them from the belt.

Get a thin wire wheel to go on a bench grinder and lightly dress inside the V to remove the shine.
If you have home sandblasting gear, this works well too as does an emery disc on a backing run slowly on a 4" grinder.
But me, I get to take mine to work, have them metalsprayed and re machined!!

I tried that last year. After much anguish getting the 'non-servicable' circlip out, I fitted a new bearing (when you get it out, grind two flats on the outer edges of the tips of the circlip so it can be easily removed in future).

But, as the experienced JC pointed out to me a few weeks ago, when the big rubber bush that holds the movable part of the tensioner to the base is totally shot and the pulley can no longer sit parallel to the other pulleys, it distorts the belt's path and causes lots of squeaks.

So, please check that the tensioner pulley runs true after you fit the new bearing.
