300tdi lift pump fuel leak
Currently touring in Tassie and the lift pump on my D1 has started to leak fuel out of the small hole underneath the pump. A small drip every 5 seconds or so.
Whats the likely failure mode with these pumps? Do they leak like this for quite a while with no real dramas, or is it likely to die in a big way and leave me stranded?
I'm tossing up whether to head back to Hobart today and try and get a pump, or just continue on with my original plans.

You may find that it is actually the fuel inlet or outlet pipe has cracked due to vibration fatigue. I am onto my third lift pump due to this.

Lift pump leak
Just replaced mine this morning for the same reasons. There is a good run down on how to do it at
300TDI lift pump change - LR4x4 - The Land Rover Forum
Also, there is an AULRO post about blanking off the engine plate and running a bypass fuel hose.

So if you remove the pump and blank off the hole how do you prime the system after a filter change?.Just buy another and leave it as LR designed it. Pat

Priming
I haven't used the lift pump lever to prime the system for the last 3 filters. No dramas. The main pump pulls it through OK.
I can see the blanking plate is an option if you want to save money and are not travelling but, as I said, I replaced the pump. I couldn't be bothered cutting a plate and then making up a bypass hose.

Are you down on power? Having trouble getting up hills?
Why not call Justin Cooper in Kingston?
25 minutes or so from Hobart, and he could sort it in a very short time.
Cheers

Thanks everyone for your replies. Had a few comms issues so didn't get to reply sooner.
I ended up just driving the 100km to Hobart and replacing the pump. Bought one from Alan at British4WD and he recommended a nearby mechanic to fit it. Was all done in the time it took us to eat lunch and have a quick wander round the shops.
For some reason I thought Justin Cooper was in Launceston otherwise I would definitely have given him a call. Would have been nice to catch up with someone who has contributed so much on this forum.
As it turned out we ended up staying that night at Kingston anyway!
We are back home in Geelong now after 2500k's in Tassie, and no other issues with Oscar (our D1).
The friends we were traveling with had their battery die when they pulled up for fuel. Started perfectly in the morning but completely dead when they went to drive away from the pump.
Oscar came to the rescue with a couple of jump starts before they found somewhere to fit a new battery.
All in all, it was an awesome trip, and the only things I had to use from my tool bag were the inspection mirror and multimeter

How much does a fuel pump cost as mine has started leaking.
