After a lot of testing of different oils in my disco - I settled on SynTrans (is not cheap). It provides good lubrication and helped improve gear changing when cold over a wide range of temperatures (-5 to 35) on start up.

    M1 ATF I hope.

Syntrans works well in a few too, as does R/L MTL.

    It's Syntrans for me.

The title of this thread is pretty apt is it not? Although sometimes ignorance really is bliss!

    Cheers.

I think it proves there's no ''right'' oil,it's the box that decides. Pat

IMO MTL is a better oil, it's is a full synthetic with predominantly POE bases from a well respected boutique blender, and we can't get MTF94 anyway.
Is this fine to use in a newly rebuilt gearbox?
And where can you get it?

    warning

rang the mechanic i use and said this is the oil i wanted to use in my r380 their response was that they were going to use an 80w oil what they use in most 4wd s thankfully to everyone whom responded i was able to explain like a profesional that it needed a thinner oil for the pump to work and that i would provide them with my own thankyou once again most likely saved me some money in the long run

    Motul 300

Syntrans had performed pretty well although I did add some Nulon Teflon additive to try improve the changes which it did. There was minimal metal on the magnetic drain plug which compared to ATF showed good lubrication.

I thought I would give Motul 300 a go at the last gear oil change.

Having done nearly 2000km and it has worked very well for a gearbox with a slightly difficult 2nd / 3rd gear change. I suspect the synchros are worn but until it stops working I will just keep using good oil to prolong its life.

Once I have done another 20,000km I will decide which oil to keep using or which oil to try next.
