    brakes, single and double line.

series 1 discos had single and double line front brake systems.
from what i can see the master cylinder is the same and the callipers are identical except for 2 inputs for the twin line system.

    my questions are.

which system is better and why
    and
if you had a twin line system and single line callipers can you blank one of the flex lines off, and would it affect braking effort?

    cheers phil

Hi Phil, possibly the best method is to remove the lines and revert back to single(MA chassis onwards) calipers and plumbing. This will also allow you to fit the Defender front calipers and vented discs... AFAIR regarding the M/Cyls there is a difference in that there may be a second outlet, under the M/Cyl, this can be blocked off though using a bleeder or similar plug.

I'll take a look during the week if you like, I have both types of vehicles at work at present.

ive got a spare master cyl that came from a 96 disco..its the same as the one on the ute. thats why i thought they were the same?
the callipers on the ute are rooted, but i have a set of good singles to use. with the body lift on the ute ide say that there may have been extended flexable lines made up as they are miles longer than the single flexable ones.
so, im presuming that there isnt any real bennifit in running the twin line set up as it would be a common place mod/upgrade. i spose LR did it to save costs? but not sacrifice safety?

    cheers phil

    Hi Phil,

They went away from the dual circuit brakes and introduced an ABS option not long after, I guess that is why. The single line system is far less complicated and gives better pedal feel I think, I would go to it if you are rebuilding/ modifying a vehicle, saves a bit of plumbing and is far simpler to maintain/ diagnose etc. The rear calipers will be the same etc anyway so for your cicumstances it would be the easiest way to get it all back on the road again. Since the single line system was of a later design/ release, then you should have no problems with rego etc.
