    Wheel Seal Leak

    Gday

I have a 300 Tdi Defender with a rear Salisbury Diff. I have a leak in the wheel seal in between where the hub bolts onto the axle housing

Heres a photo (its the dark patch behind the brake disc):

Is this something I can fix easily myself or shall I take it to a mechanic?

    Thanks

Not sure whether that model is oil or grease lubricated bearings. If the former it is the hub seal, if the latter the axle seal as well. Neither is a very big or difficult job. A workshop manual is useful, only special tool needed will be a spanner for the bearing nut.

Thanks. I have myself a Haynes Manual, and a mate of mine just offered me a hand doing it so I should be right

    Jock,

That rear axle has had the oil to hub conversion done already when the maxi axles were fitted. you will need a new RTC3511 hub seal, and pay close attention to the condition of the seal surface on the stub axle as this has to be pretty well immaculate to prevent oil leaking past.
