GETTING A TENSIONER PULLEY BACK ON

ok so me and my brother have tried to diognose what the variety of sounds that have been coming out of me engine are today and whilst i was reviewing the manual and in his wisdom he pulled the tensioner pulley out,.....before he knew what he was doing , and now we cant get it back in, theres a lil tab that sticks out with a "2" on it and i read somewhere to lever this to release the tension to help get the pulley back in.......no joy anyone got any tips to help get the pulley back in?

If it's the springloaded tensioner, then there's a locating dowel on the back of it. That just locates onto the housing and the bolt (or bolts, can't remeber if there are 2) just do up. The use a spanner to pull back the spring loaded tensioner when you put the belt back on.

The other tensioer is just three bolts on the front of the timing cover.

As others have said, the auto tensioner has a small dowel on the back of it, will slide straight it when at the correct angle. Make sure the belt is well out of the way so it doesn't put any pressure on it as it needs to go on straight to go back in easily.

What noises have you been trying to diagnose? If its a noisey chirping type noise from the belt area, and you suspect the tensioner, it is fairly well known that manufacturing tolerances can leave them slightly off angle, if this sounds like you, try putting a 5c coin between the back of the tensioner and the engine at about the 9o'clock position and tighten back up. After 2 new belts of different brands and much frustration, it has worked perfectly for me. And way cheaper than a new tensioner

    Good luck with it!

In that case just take the "Good luck with it!" part

Just sort through all the issues one at a time if necessary, once its all sweet it'll be an awesome vehicle and give you many happy times. I'm finally getting to that stage with mine where the good times outweigh the frustrations
