    Bonnet mount

Is it advisable to fit a spare wheel bonnet mount kit to a 99 model 300 tdi defender? Will the hinges etc take the weight? Any other problems other than loss of view close in? Jim

IIRC landrover didnt discontinue the bonnet mount as an accessory till the TD5's, so you should be fine

I have one on my 300 Tdi and love it. Have been many thousands of k's on rough road and no problems. Alledgedly you can't say the same is true about the standard rear door spare carrier!

Opinions differ here as to the desirability of bonnet mounts here. It is true they detract from corner visibilty. I've found they increase fuel consumption a tad, and make the steering heavier so I only use it on trips away for the second spare or as first spare when the cabin is loaded with gear and people.

Another negative is you need two people to open the bonnet because when you pull the lever in the cab, the weight prevents it from "popping" and you either need a tiny block of wood to hold the lever pulled or a 2nd person to lift when you pull the lever.

But they look cool and they do solve a storage problem. I've concentrated on the negatives but I'm glad I have one all considered.

I use a bonnet mount on out of the way type trips to carry a spare tyre only, ie not a full wheel. Then use the space for light things - spare air filter etc.

This reduces the weight subsantially, but means you would have to spend some time wherever if the 2nd spare was ever needed.
