I think you are running the wrong oil.I have run penrite diesel light in mine from nearly new and it is as strong as an ox,20/60 is a heavy oil for a small engine. Pat
Just recently, my Defender has developed an engine noise that sounds expensive.
At high revs (i.e. at around the time to change up a gear) the engine gets a real diesel rattle/clatter. It also happens under engine braking going down a gear. It does not happen under load.
There´s plenty of good quality oil - Penrite 20/60 diesel and I´ve since done an oil change with no improvement.
The engine has done 195,000km and has been meticulously maintained.
Other than the rattle, the engine is running superbly.
Anybody have any suggestions about where to start looking please?
Regards
Scott

Couple of things to check.
Valve clearances (including valve caps).
Crank pulley b olt tension (can come loose with severely bad results).
Vacuum pump (can fall apart internally).

I'm with the boys above, I see absolutely no advantages with anything heavier than an XW-40.
Disadvantages with a 20W-60 are greater pumping losses and therefore less power, greater strain on the pump drive (not a biggy) and possible oil starvation to critical parts including the turbo bearings at startup in very cold weather.
That big a jump in viscosity can make a huge difference, not only in power but also response.
BTW, the viscosity of HPR Diesel is the same as an SAE140 gear oil @ 100*C ! (normal oil running temp is 90-110*C)
If your engine isn't consuming oil with an xW-40, I wouldn't run any heavier.
Mine has a funny clatter that's emerged at high revs too, (b-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d-d) only really on the over-run.
I'm thinking injectors, injector pump or the vacuum pump, otherwise it's running superbly.
Thanks for your thoughts. I might try an oil change then.
It doesn't use any oil, so there's probably no reason for the heavier viscosity.
I forgot to mention that the noise doesn't happen when the engine's cold, but appears after a relatively short time of running (maybe 5 minutes).
Thanks again
Scott
Check the alternator, bottom bolt may have broken and its swinging on the top bolt.

When I'm here I want to be out there.
Well, to follow-up on the noise in my motor....
Dropped-in unannounced to MR Thursday last week, they had a listen to it and suggested prompt action. Booked in for Monday (today).
They dropped the sump and found that the big-end bearings on #3 were shot, #4 were on the way out and #1 and #2 were OK.
All fixed by lunchtime and away we go again.
Probable cause? THE WRONG BLOODY OIL - PENRITE 20W/60 IS TOO HEAVY and probably starved the bearings on startup.
Me, well I feel like an idiot - tried to do the right thing by my ageing engine and ended up nearly killing it.
Good call by Jason at MR - no damage to the crank because we got it in time.
Seems you blokes were right on the money about the oil - pity I didn't ask before I used it!

Scott
Thanks for that Info;
It's good to know the facts about the heavier oils , it's lucky you had your vehicle booked in and looked at before any major drama unfolded.
I personally use Castrol Diesel 15-40w and never have any problems , Previous to that I was using Shell Remula and again never had any problems.
