Thread: Disco 2 TD5 Ignition Switch or Starter Solenoid Problems?

Question Disco 2 TD5 Ignition Switch or Starter Solenoid Problems?

With my Disco 2 manual, I have recently noticed that sometimes when I go to start the engine the starter doesn't engage at all, the dash warning lights all dim but that is all, exactly the same as an automatic would be if it was in Drive etc.
If I lock/unlock with the key fob, still in the ignition lock 2 or 3 times it starts OK then seems OK for a while, maybe a few days even, the problem seems to be totally random.

Does this sound more like a faulty starter solenoid, or is it a worn out switch?
Or is there something ECU controlled that inhibits the engagement of the starter that may be malfunctioning?

If the switch is worn, I assume that it detaches from behind the ignition lock, is it a major drama to replace?

next time it happens get under the car and give the starter motor a tap with a socket handle or something. If the solenoid or something in the starter is sticking then this will free it up and the car will most likely start. If thats the case take the starter motor off and take it to an auto electrician, shouldnt cost to much to have it refurbished.

I had mine done, it was full of mud (mine is a Tdi though) cost me $165 to have the motor rebuild with new solenoid, brushes etc and its fine now.

    Thumbs up Problem Solved!

OK, it is all fixed now!

The problem was in fact burnt solenoid contacts, I bought a new plunger & contacts kit from repairkitsuk, for $28.50 including post from the UK.
