    Rear pinnion seal leak.....still!

    Hello people

My rear pinnion seal is still leaking after its third seal change.....

So we are assuming that when we changed the rear prop from the rotoflex to uni's and changed the adapter at the diff we have damaged the diff housing trying to get the spigot out......as it was a bastard to get out.

is there anything I can do, I think the diff has spent its whole time leaking since this mod was done. probably nearly a year now! good rust prevention I suppose

Worth double checking the breather. Make sure you remove the union from the axle casing & check that too...

Since I was in the near vicinity when the conversion took place, it may not be the housing unless you can see oil coming out from the outer circumference of the seal.(And if it is, loctite make a product just from that problem) I've learnt a number of things from my Disco: Seals from TR spares are not necessarily worth the effort.( Or did you get the part from the same place); Is the nut on the flange torqued up right? It may be that the preload is out - the pinion bearings can wear after all. If there is a groove on the flange, a speedi sleeve will fix it up.

So there you go - not the worst thing but fixable.

This is one of things that may be wrong with mine......any idea on cost for a front and rear flange and are they the same front & rear? I have the greasable UJ conversion on my D2 which I presume will have some bearing on this.

I had the flange on my RRC machined many years ago because of continued leaks. Only a few thou thickness was removed and the standard seal has no problems.

Following the advice of someone who sounded as if he knew what he was talking about, when I fitted a new seal to a diff, I fitted a couple of gaskets behind the seal to make it run on a different place on the drive flange. There was a slight groove where it had been running.

It seemed to do the trick.

Speedisleeve is your friend. Bearing places have them aplenty.

What sort of $ might this cost and how straight forward is it to remove the flanges? I believe I have the same RRC set up under my D2 - i.e. greasable unis - so would presume mine is exactly the same as yours.

We used to get the seal face on the flange machined down, then sleeve shrunk on and machined to the original diameter. Never had seal leaks when the job was done properly.
