300Tdi -Engine oil? & Viscous Fan Questions

    Hi
I read elsewhere on the forum that the recommended engine oil for a 300 TDi is Penrite Light Diesel (15W -40). I can't seem to find that anywhere. The closest I can find is Penrite 15 which is a semi-synthetic oil with a viscosity rating of 15W -50. Penrite recommend Penrite 5 which is a 5w-40 oil. Which is the best to use in a 300TDi with 180k?
I have also noticed that there is play in my radiator fan. It appears to be in the viscous unit itself. There is no movement in the water pump shaft and the bearings are quiet. Is this movement normal or should I be replacing the viscous unit?
    Thanks

look in your operators manual. it will list an acceptable range of oils which from memory includes everything from a 0-30 to a 15-50 and theres no harm in using a semi synthetic.

If the viscus is wobbling on its hub replace it, it can be repaired but its not worth it.

    Afternoon

I use Penrite HPR diesel 15, been using if for a while now with no concerns. Oil brands and rating's is a very big topic. This is what I use and I am happy with it.

Hi mate, i rang caltex and they recommend Caltex Havoline Semi Synthetic, and i used that for while but the caltex depot in Bathurst closed down and they work out of orange which is to far away. I have since been using Valvoline Super Diesel 15W/40 with great results, its a good oil.

Use a 32mm fan spanner (LH thread) and spin the viscous unit off and check the centre support bearing.

Re engine oil, any good xW-40 diesel specific engine oil, preferably a CI-4, CI-4+ or ACEA E4/E6/E7 from one of the major refiners/blenders.
These are heavy duty diesel specs, indicating a much more robust oil than car/diesel specs. (eg. SM/CF)
