    Unhappy Disco 2 vibration issue

    Hi
I have had a 'strange vibration' just start on the disco. It only occurs on accelleration and decelleration with the clutch engaged. Fairly constant in frequency around the 20-40km/h stage of accelleration. Depressing the clutch makes it stop and above the 40kmh mark it disappears altogether. From my internet research it indicates 'internal CV joints' . I am not completley sold on this as it came on suddenly rather than gradually getting worse as you would expect from a CV wearing.

Tyres are BFG A/T's about 90% gone. Pressures are at Landrovers recommended as per the door sticker. K's are 148000. Engine is a TD5 with manual box.

I have had a good wriggle of the uni's and driveshafts and cannot find anything obvious. I have noticed a small amount of clutch shudder sometime ago that seems to have gotton less recently.

I drove it again tonight and now it seems to have gone?????

I have also read the stories surrounding the 'double cardan' joint failure that sounds fairly dramatic. What spooks me is that it came on instantly last night after driving it home from work without incicence.

Also, there was a mechanic who ran a business in T'ville called 'just landrovers' From research he was a guru on these beasties. However, his number is no longer connected. Any ideas??

Thanks Guys for any help you can give me. I am losing sleep over this as it is my main drive and has not exhibited anything like this before.

An exploded double cardon joint can be quite dramatic so should be ruled-out first. Its the double uni joint on the front prop-shaft which ex-factory has non-greasable unis. Best to remove the shaft, at least from the TC end and make sure the joint moves smoothly in all directions, as it can be hard to detect as partly-siezed whilst in situ.

    G'day Craig,

Welcome to AULRO - you saw my suggestion over at the other place... so we'll see what else comes up..

If you do a search on propshaft or driveshaft you should find lots more information.

Hopefully it's something simple - but the front double cardan joint failure can get nasty very fast - so best be cautious..

There are a few Townsville members here too - so good chance someone can put you on to a local who can help.

    Cheers, Mark

    had a closer look

Ok Thanks guys you have prompted me to look closer. I can feel movement in the DC joint in one of the Unis so I am guessing that is where the issue is.

Question (pardon my ignorance here) can it be driven with the front driveshaft removed for a short time? Or can someone recommend ANYONE here in t'ville that can do this repair for me super quick. I am happy to pay in cash or beer but I simply do not have the time to do it myself or have the vehicle off the road. I have a regular mechanic but he is like the doctor. You need to book 2 weeks ahead.

If any of you have done one of these before I am happy to help in any way possible but as I said I need this vehicle on the road as it is my main drive.

    Regards
    Craig

    Craig,

If you can lock your centre diff - you can drive it as a rear wheel drive.

What year is it? Do you have a diff lock leaver in the car?

    Craig,

Its possible that you may still have the diff lock internals in the transfer case..

If that is the case you can lock it manually from underneath with a 10 mm spanner.

    These might help:

BTW.. without a locked centre diff - if you take the shaft out - it won't drive.

As far as hands on help... either with the car - or drinking your beer

Unfortunately I'm a bit far away!

    Good luck with it...

    Smile Thanks

Thanks to all who have contributed.

After discovering that my vehicle is in the band of builds that DOESN'T have the manual diff lock (yes after removing the entire centre console etc) at around 2 am this morning, I am still in the begging paddock for a swift repair.

As I pump up the tyres on the pushbike, can any T'ville members who are mechanics (bush or otherwise) check their diaries and see if they can fit in a very sad disco 2 for what seeems like a fairly simple repair?

All offers will be much appreciated and rewarded hansomely.

    Craig
