Gday Nat,
My experience with the tdi fan belt is that if coolant comes in contact with the belt and dries, it makes it squeel...
Hi all,
1 - firstly, my Tdi Disco has recently developed a squeel from the fan belt ... Put some soap on it which quietened it down but it came back after 50 k's or so. Belt doesnt look worn, Is it as simple as an adjust / tension or replacement ?
2 - Lucky me ... a guy I do some work for has bought a TD5 Extreme Defender as our hunting/ boat towing / launching machine.
180k on the clock, a hard life, but sound vehicle.
Only major problem , it is very hard to start when cold and had a squeel noise coming from the fan, I (eventually ) started it last night and the engine light stayed on (flashing) as smoke started to come out of each wheel arch then also into the cabin. I thought she was going to blow so had to reverse out of the carport into the open garden ( in case the fire spread to the house) , then shut her down.
After the smoke cleared I found a hardened and broken fan belt underneath.
A - how hard is it to refit a new belt ?
B - Any chance this slipping belt was causing starting diffiulties ? ( my guess is no )
Any other tips greatly appreciated !!
Regards Nat

td5 bits:
If the tensioner or a bearing has failed that can cause them to be difficult / impossible to start. (this would also tie in with the smoke so could well be the problem)
Not too hard to change but work out the route of the belt first. probably a picture on here somewhere.
Once you have worked it out, draw it inside the bonnet with a permenant marker for future reference!
Check out the PDF in this post: TD5 belt diagram.
