Dunno how much fuel was lost when mine broke,but there was a pool of fuel over a meter in diameter under the car in the carport,and the wifes report was "the car seems to smell a bit like diesel"you better have a look.

Sounds like a good idea to leave the bolt in.
Mine wasnt hit with anything,i recon the plasic fatigues,probably caused by heat.
