    breathers

    Hi
my old disco had transfer case and auto trans breather lines terminating at the back of the engine..it was a 98. My new disco is a 98 and there is no sign of any breather lines. Do some discos just have breather valves and no lines?

should be there but may have been removed or damaged either during a box pull or other repair work.

Did you end up finding the breathers Edddo?

Mine is a 97 300tdi and doesn't appear to have breather lines from transfer or auto.

Found them - I just needed to have a decent look.

They finish at the back of the head (300tdi), both tubes are attached by one clamp bolted to the back of the head.

I just spent a few minutes extending the diff breathers up to the same level (top of the firewall). $5 at Bunnings for a roll of irrigation riser tube and a couple of barbed joiners - all done.

Not sure if its the "best" way, but I just bought some 4mm irrigation riser tubing from Bunnings (10m for about $4), and some barbed joiners.
I cut off the 'loop' on the end of the original breather and pushed in the joiner and new hose. Front diff I ran up to the top of the firewall, the rear one I ran back and put it up through the grommet that carries the RH taillight loom.

A few cable ties, and it was all done. I blew down the new hoses with my mouth to pressurise the diff and made sure it breathed out again once I took my face away. If you cant blow a decent amount of air in then the original breather is probably blocked.

I'm running a Penrite oil (think its 80/90), but there may be something better for yours having done more K's

I also use Penrite oil: Hypoid gear oil 80w-90.

I've also heard of people using the heavier Penrite oil, 80w-140.
Being 140 I believe it helps reduce the clunks in higher mileage cars.
