Unhappy Bugger, 245 75 R16 rubbing on one side

Well after reading all the threads, starting a few arguments, I went with 245 75 R16 for the D1.

Left hand turn, full lock, tyre rubbing on radius arm

Right hand down, full lock, no tyre rubbing at all.

    How can that be!

Easy, just adjust the steering limit adjuster on the LHS hub.
    Problem solved...

    Quite easy.

The stop bolt needs adjusting on one side and doesn't need it on the other.

I had to adjust one of mine when I fitted new tyres of the same size but different brand.

Obviously one side had a bit more to spare than the other.

Or to put it another way, you weren't quite getting full lock on one side before.

just to let you know it is illegal to run two different tread patterns on the steer tyres,ie the front tyers. obviously you would do it to get back home but to leave them on is not allowed, just for information sake.

Well that was a short and sweet thread.

Thanks for the input, I've checked in the manual and I think I'll try to do this adjustment myself.

Not sure why the tyre fitter didn't do it in the first place?

The front axle transverse location is by a panhard rod (that is the rod that attaches to the axle at one end and the chassis at the other). If your vehicle has been lifted or has sagged then the axle will not in the centre of the truck any more. I personally don't reckon they ever were. So basically on all range rover classics discos 1 and defenders the front axle is not in the centre of the chassis and one wheel rubs first on the radius arms. You can get adjustable panhard rods but they cost drug money.

Obviously you dont need to change the panhard rod this to fix the problem, that is just why it happens one one side more than the other.

What I meant to say was "when I fitted a full set of new tyres that were a different brand from the ones that were fitted previously".

All my tyres are the same.

I was trying to make the point that even though both sides at the front (and the back) had been fitted with exactly the same tyres, one side rubbed and the other didn't.

I'm assuming it was my post and my welfare that was causing concern.

I don't mind at all when people are being helpful. It's not unusual for someone to be unaware of something even as basic as that simply because they have never been in a position where it was relevant.

Anyway, someone else who didn't know about mismatched tyres might read this thread in future and they might have interpreted my post the same way you did, so your comment may be of value to someone else in the future.

    Thanks for your concern.
