What colour is the smoke Jim? If its bluey white, then its likely pump timing or fuel starvation. If its black, it's likely over-fueling.
I'm sure I have seen a thread on this but I can't find it. My pump has recently been overhauled and now my defender is blowing quite a lot of smoke and fumes. Far more than before. I feel that the pump is over-fueling and I know this can be adjusted to make it leaner. What is the procedure and how difficult is it? Jim![]()

Jim, something has gone awry. When a pump is rebuilt it also gets recalibrated. I would be very hesitant about adjusting the main fuelling screw as this should be set.
Over-fuelling will give it considerably more power. Has it gained in power?
I'm leaning to 2 possibilities:
1. the pump has not been calibrated correctly
2. the timing is set incorrectly
restricted air flow
blocked air cleaner or colapsed pipe on the air induction side
cheers

Thanks all. The vehicle is fitted with diesel gas and gets around 8 to 8.5 l/100k diesel with excellent power. It seems to have more power then before pump rebuild so I am assuming since nothing else has been changed that the adjustment is a little too aggressive. Jim

Take it back to whoever built the pump and have them check it out, Regards Frank.
