Which Deep Cycle Battery - Recommendations??

    Hi Guys,

Need a new deep cycle (2nd) battery for my disco.

Not particularly interested in Optima ect as I cannot see the benefit, although I do realise the quality difference.

What brand are people using, and what do people recomend??

    Cheers
    Dave.

    Hi Dave,
I admit I spent the little bit extra on Optima D34 Yellow Tops - $316 from Battery World in Sydney. The Yellow tops being capable of deep cycle and starting duties.
I work in special events so my RRC often sits engine off, doors open, invertor running, big hazard light bar on etc for a few hours at a time all on the primary battery - I've yet to have to switch to the 2nd battery for a start..

Mates in the yacht charter industry recommended these or a another good quality AGM - they like the fact that they charge a lot quicker than regular lead acids.
    cheers

    Optima/orbital

I see that on my orbital battery it is not recommended to expose it to over 50DegC. Bit hard near the turbo! I built a heat shield. Others have reccomended less radical Absorbed Glass Mat "AGM" batteries in this role that stand heat better?

I have had an "Absorbed Power" 90AH AGM for 4.5 years now and it still appears to be in perfect condition.

About Absorbed Power AGM absorbed glass mat battery

I have it mounted in the second battery compartment of my RRC so it is somewhat exposed to engine heat but no problem so far. And it has done a couple of trips outback , the most recent of which destroyed a Supercharge Allrounder with an internal break up of some sort.

PS My Optima Yellow Top only lasted 3.5 years before springing an acid leak at neg terminal and losing about 20% capacity.

My current Optima Yellow top battery will be the last one I buy. The hike in the price of an Optima is not justified over cheaper brands.
I've had three Yellow tops in ten years....the first one lasted 5 years, the second lost a cell after two years and the third failed to hold a charge after three years.
I'll get a cheapo deep cycle battery next time and just hope it lasts more than a year.
You can buy four no-name brand deep cycle batteries for the price of one Yellow Top Optima in Dubai!

I've just bought a Full River DC100Ah for the camper trailer, I wouldn't put one in a D1's battery tray as I can hardly lift it

I have changed all of my batteries to Full River AGM's. 2 in the disco (1 is 90 AH, can't remember what the other is), 2 by 110 AH in rangie and 2 by 110 AH in boat.

Yes they were hard to lift into the disco. The rangie batteries are relocated behind cab (rangie is single cab).

Im running a super charge allrounder there biggest one in my rangie as my firdge and secondary power source seems to be a good unit and we get a good discount through super charge being a member of AULRO

I have a DC 12V 55AH Fullriver as my auxillary sitting beside the turbo, and before this I had a HGL 12V 60AH Fullriver that was in the car for 4.5yrs, only reason for the replacement was I wanted a fresh battery for our Cape trip, the old battery is still good and will be a spare for the camper.

    Thanks for the replys.

Fullriver certainly seem to be the consensus. Price is also not to bad considering.

Will also ring Exide today, as they seem to offer pretty good discounts to LROCV.

    Cheers
    Dave
