If it is the pump that has failed I recommend that you fit an external pump to replace it. That way any future failures will be an easy roadside repair.

will do that . do u think i could leave the old pump as is and still have enough fuel flow thru it if i need to put on an external pump . i don't have room in the shed atm to pull tank out [ got a fairlane in there ] and the weather isn't lookin too good. thanks bigjon ,cheers.
I don't know if it would work, but I wouldn't recommend it.
When I did mine I removed the in tank pump and soldered a piece of pipe in the act as the pickup.
For the pump I am using one to suit a VL Commodore. Never had any fuel supply issues with it.
cool , got a vl sitting at the block with only the radiator removed, if the relays r fine I'll be going to pick up the pump off the vl sunday . if the relays r the prob will change em and take the pump off vl on next trip to Bendigo and keep it handy .
you didnt hit any big bumps just before it stalled on you........?
big enough to trip the inertia switch........
na was on flat road.
not sure if any1 is interested , the historic rally association is having a rally on the 30th of this month , the event i think is a night rally starting from Dunolly Victoria .

put new relays in but could not find a place that had the diode pack [ mine is a red 1 in between the 2 relays under the seat ], after turning key and still no go , thought i mite check fuses in dash , low and behold the 1 for f/pump was blown , after changing it the car started and ran fine , big smile on my face changed to a scowl when i thought if that f**ken racv ****** [ and me ] had checked them i could have driven home . so anyway after it was running for 10-15 mins i turned it off and went inside for 10 mins come out and went to start it to put in drive and it wouldn't start , it now keeps blowing the f/pump fuse instantly[ with old or new relays in ]. could it be the diode i didn't change or do i have to look for a short in the circuit ? any likely places to look first ? sorry to be a pain in the butt . cheers chuck.
It could still be a faulty fuel pump drawing too much current and blowing the fuse.
I don't think it is likely to be a dead short in the fuel pump wiring as that should blow the fuse instantly.
I guess there is a slight chance that there is a short in the wiring that only touches earth when the loom is moved a bit (driving), but I don't think it is very likely.
From memory the diode pack is ignition related, not fuel pump.
