gona rip out floor , found bit on net about drillin rivets and takin out floor from inside , think thats the way to go as will have room to work from above even in rain , found plenty of external pumps on ebay cheap so will get new 1 and fit external , cheers.
it is blowin fuse instantly now
Fuel pump has probably seized due to picking up crap from the bottom of the tank.
When I fitted my external pump I made sure the fuel went through the filter before the pump to prevent anything like that from happening.
had the same thing in mind , may as well look after new 1 , will also put an access panel in floor while it is out in case new fuel pick up needs any future adjustment or repairs .
OK today took out floor , that was easy ,just drill pop rivets and release the two pins underneath that hold seat belt bolt brackets . pulled out pump [ looked like new ] tryed it direct to batt and way she goes ****in fuel out to wards me as if to say 'see idiot i'm good' put it back in , changed fuel hoses while i was there and took measurements for an access panel that went from 4 inches left of the pump and all the way to the right to give easy access to the fuel filter also.

the floor is ready to go back in tomorrow and i will have a look along the wiring for damage or wear casing the prob . gettin there . cheers .
good news ' THE RANGIE RUNS AGAIN ' .
this morning i put the floor back in and connected up the pump, give it a wiz and after a few seconds to get fuel back to engine she fired up like there was never a problem . i will change back the old relays 1 at a time to see if it was 1 of them causing the prob . if it is not them i am going to put it down to a gremlin that lives in the elecs . best thing is it hasn't cost much to get running[ a few fuses ] and i now have an access panel . i will still fit an external pump with new wiring circuit and make a pick up and keep in the back, ready for when this pump decides to stop again .
as for my q? about if an external pump will draw fuel thru a stoped in tank pump ? no, no way, no chance, not at all !!!!!!! while it was off i give it a go at blowing thru just to see and almost popped my ears .
thanks for all your help guys . much appreciated .
cheers chuck .:D
the shaking and vibrations from removing the pump may have freed it up temporarily.......
it may fail again as it hasnt been fixed........fuel pumps were pretty common on the rangies.......
i would be replacing the pump for peace of mind.......
but first check the wiring to make sure theres no short anywhere......
a stone may have flicked up and damaged it......for example.......
Just had a similar problem with a Disco 1,efi 3.5. Intermittent spark, no fuel , wound over fine, some days would start and then other days just stop and not go for a day or two then start again. To cut a long story short, it was found that the rear of the ignition switch had somehow lost a tab which was holding it together. So in ran when it wanted and had numerous faults. Worth a quick check. Who knows????
