    Freelander fuel filter

Can someone tell me where the fuel filter is hiding on a 2003 freelander diesel?

Standing in front of vehicle its on the RHS. Look behind the battery towards rear of car you will see 2 cylindrical objects, one is the fuel filter the other is one of the fuel pumps. You should be able to unplug the sensor and remove the hoses using the quick release fittings. It is easier to work on when removed from vehicle.

It is situated behind the right rear wheel. Take off the wheel, the plastic wheel arch lining and you will see the tray, hold in place by two bolts, one of which is a pain to get at (size 10 they are, btw). You will find two main devices, one is the fuel lift pump, the other the filter. To get it out, you will have to disconnect the complete assembly. Make sure to clamp the hoses securely on reassembly.

    Happy hours guaranteed...
    Cheers

Thanks Mate. I will have a look see next time the Daughter comes over, whats big harold referring to?
I looked there and it reassembles something more like a one way valve.
Is it a spin on like the Disco or an inline like whats found on a pertrol car?

    Thanks Lionel

My handbook says "The fuel filter is located on the left-hand side of the engine compartment bulkhead".

So it looks like it can be located in different locations in different positions depending on the year.

Don't feel bad Ole Mate, I'm still not convinced it's in the right rear wheel arch either, no offense Jojo.
I crawled all over and under it on Sunday, to the point of laying the rear seats over and removing the inspection plate for the fuel sender pick up.
I then traced the fuel lines down the left chassis rail to the position you described but there is not the filter I expected, like I said earlier, it looks like a valve of some sort with quick release connectors. It did not seem big enough to be a fuel filter or any type I have seen before.
Could one of the Land Rover mechanics chip and set me straight please.
    Thanks for all the responses.
    Just for the record, it's a 2003 TD4 Freelander.
    Cheers Lionel

Have you looked as indicated - that is what my Freelander workshop manual says you will find the fuel filter for earlier TD4s. The handbook has pictures and explains how to replace it.

Sorry mate, it is there. Well, it should be and will be . Unless there was a special export version for Oz. You will not be able to see it from inside, and from underneath there is a mud shield obstructing the view. If there is some goo under the car, you won't even see the bolts holding it in place. A 2003 FL has the fuel filter (it's an in line, btw) behind the rear wheel just beside the fuel pump, whereas the earlier Td4 had it in the engine compartment (up till MY 2002). To get at it you will have to remove the inner wheel arch liner (hold in place by fiddly screw-in-plastic rivnut-equivalent). Be careful not to break the quick-release connectors, these can be tricky too. Ask me how I know...
I know all this because my better half's FL is a 2003, and I had to do this bl**dy job quite recently.

    Good luck!
