Disco series 1- whacky cruise control

    Hi all -

I'm very new to the site and really aren't sure I'm posting this thread in the right place, so if I'm out of line - please be nice and point me in the right direction.... thanks.

My 1998 disco 1 -V8i is giving me cruise control headaches.

I was having trouble with the immobilizer a few months back - no auto eletrician wanted to touch it, so was forced to take it into southern land rover (cannington, WA)
Got the ignition problem fixed, but had them take a look at the cruise control as it was intermittently dropping out and not coming back on.... repeated reinitiation sometimes kicked it back in... after a couple of hours of highway driving.
They checked right through all of the vaccume hoses - and everything seemed fine..... in the end, they deduced it must be the "diaphragm housing"??? - and quoted me $900 - I promptly asked them nicely to go forth and love thyselves -

Not really sure if they couldnt find the fault, and just wanted me to go away and what better way to do it with a $900 bill....

Has anyone had a similar problem?
It still works, but is not really reliable.....

Again, perhaps this should be posted elsewhere, and I apologize if I've posted inappropriately.

    Appreciate any thoughts or comments.
    Cheers.

is it factory or after market?

    we have both
on our V8 it was doing the same thing ended up being a small split on the vacuum lines
on the after market one....you set it to say 65/70 and it just gets faster and faster until you cancel it you can set it again and it will be ok ...This one we don't know what's wrong with it and its out to get it on 70 you have to set it at 65.

I would have another look your self around the vac lines just to make sure
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

    Hi Dullbird.

    Thanks for the reply.

It's factory, although I do have an aftermarket one lying around in the shed that I'm loathed to install... just for simplicity and tidiness.
Speed doesnt seem to effect it's performance, and when I can get it to kick in, it maintains contstant speed.
I have gone right though and checked / replaced sections of the vaccume hosing to satisfy myself.....
I thought $900 was a bit steep, but do quite a bit of highway driving, so it's bordering on a necessity.

    Cheers!

I think ours ended up being a cracked t piece from memory but if you say you have checked all that I can't help you...our symptoms were exactly the same as yours on the V8 not being effected by speed and getting it to kick in sometimes but not others

Good luck sorry I couldn't help

Pull the hose off the bellows line and suck on it to see if the bellows pull in and out, replace all the hoses and finally pull the brake switch under the peddle down, you will hear it ratchet and try that.99.99% off cruise problems are split hoses or the switch isn't set right so it cancels the cruise before it starts. Another way to check your diaphragm housing( i think thats what its called)
is to pull the vacuum line off the back of it and compress it with your fingers.
When it is pushed together put one finger over the back of where the vacuum pipe goes.Let go off the diaphragm while still blocking the vacuum pipe. The diaphragm should stay compressed and not move.If it moves back to normal position i would say it is stuffed.Hope this helps.
