    mainshaft bearing disco 1

Any advice on the mainshaft bearing going on a 96 300tdi?
I have had a rattle coming from gbox/tc area. The rattle is only there when the clutch pedal is out. My local mech said it could be gear roll over noise, so I have had the g/box oil dropped and replaced with fully synthetic stuff - no improvement. Car drives great . Any advice would be great, as I only have 7 weeks till i go on my big holiday and dont want it being stuffed up... THanks in advance

do it sooner rather than later.

search up the thread on the repair job I did on his lt85 (you dont have that box but the concept is the same) and eyeball the pics of what can happen if you decide to ignore gearbox noise.

im lost. my local landrover mech says the noise is the clutch throwout bearing, he didnt even really listen to be honest. it doesnt seem right to me that the throwout bearing would be rattling if the clutch is engaged and in neutral. anyway the mech wants $1600 to do the clutch... no idea what 2 do

Are you sure its the gearbox as the throw out bearing and the springs in the clutch plate can rattle
If it was the mainshaft bearing it would be more of a noisey bearing noise and gearbox noise than a rattle

    mainshaft bearing

Hi with the gearbox in neutral, engine on idle, clutch up. gearbox sounds like a box full of nails? , does the noise go away as you increase the throttle??. If it does then I agree with 'rangieman' most likely the anti rattle springs in the clutch plate have worked loose. Not urgent but fix before long as the 'rattle' is not helping the gears.

    drive it.

get it up to speed the let it coast at idle.

if its the clutch the noise will come and go with power applications but return when the engine speed matches up for road speed at idle rpms. when you put your foot on the clutch the noise will go away.

if its the main input bearing (as in brians case) the noise will remain. when it gets as bad as brians you wont be able to keep it in 3rd gear and eventually 4th.

I have a similar noise (box of nails shaken) in my truck (1984 110 'trayback' - very early LT77). Recently had the mainshaft and all bearings holding it replaced. Old anti-rattle plate and clutch were oil saturated so had to put the old spare plate and clutch in to get back on the road.

Will do the testing as above to make sure it is my old clutch and not my newly replaced mainshaft and bearings.

If it is the clutch plate 'rattling' will that be harming my 'new' g/box?

Cheers for the simple tests as above.

yes the rattling of the springs means they are loose and not doing their job.

they help prevent shock loading of the teeth and prevents them from hammering the gearbox.
