    LT230 Transfer Wear (Input Gear????)

    Hi Guys,

    Specimen: Late 95 Disco LT230 / R380

    Got a chance tonight to pull the transfer input gear from the car.
    After a bit of mucking around and a phone call to Clarkie (cheers mate ) it was out....
    First of all, the gear is not cross drilled, as expected.
    I didn't think it to be overly worn, especially the splines. It was the teeth that seemed to be more worn??? Is this common?

    The gearbox main shaft splines possibly looked slightly worn, but it was hard to tell.

    ID say that thats been replaced before.

    the splines look ok but that wear pattern looks like a new gear thats been run up against an old one.

    but its a nice pattern and a slightly heavier oil or one with a "skinning" enhancement package will see it last a good while yet.

    So, given that the mainshaft in the box looks OK, what are other causes of excessive transmission backlash??

    Dave, you have NOTHING to worry about with that.

    This is what they look like when worn.



    Shaft looks like this:



    That shaft was over 200,000km old.

    The gear was swapped out and I am still running on the old munted shaft. It's all about to be replaced very shortly.

    The oil supply is not good, but I think Rover made it worse when they assembled the box with a big blob of grease to gum up the shaft. When I disassembled mine it was dry and packed with rusty gunge.

    One other thing to add, is that there was RTV Blue silicon gasket on the case, and the bolts where blue locktite-ed in.

    So someone has played with it before - the car has also been services well before me and is (was ) very neat before I got it.

    Thanks MacMan, the shaft was certainly nothing like that.
    The did also seem to be grease between the gear & main shaft.

    Just a point regarding the RTV.

    Some LT230s were assembled at the factory with a gasket. If that was the case, they have the preload on the bearings set to ALWAYS include a gasket. If it was set up with RTV, then use only RTV and definitely no gasket.

    Loctite is normal as far as I know. The service manual calls for loctite for reassembly.
